Conference of the Birds
The ancient myth of Simorgh and the thirty birds
suspended above a laneway in the city of Blacktown.
This work is the result of collaboration with Majid Rabet from the New Neighbours Project, a shared studio space between refugee and local artists. The installation tells the story of Simorgh, a Persian mythical bird. Thirty stainless steel laser cut birds are suspended five meters above a laneway.
This work was commissioned by the council as a preventative measure against graffiti. After five years, there was no graffiti in the laneway. It was initially to be installed for a six month period only.
This work was dedicated to the people of Blacktown, and we hoped it would form a symbol of the community's courage and will.
Commisioned by Blacktown City Council
